Let’s accept this – every one of us doesn’t have the naturally sleek straight hair that flow unfettered in the wind and we fantasize, desire, and need to straighten it. Most people like to straighten their hair at home or at a salon for getting beautiful mane of silky hair. It is done to look fashionable and new hairstyles. Nevertheless, the hair is susceptible to heat and chemicals, which are used for straightening frizzy and unruly hair. This process alas, does more damage to hair than good. So if you are opting for it, you must be aware of the potential damage caused by straightening.

Straightening can be achieved at home or in salon. Straightening is done temporarily and it needs to be done repeatedly. The chemicals and heat can change the texture of the hair for some time, but the new hair retains its natural texture and form.

Here are some side effects and damages caused by hair straightening and range from minor dullness or major hair loss:

  • It can lead to permanent hair loss

This is one of the biggest and most alarming risks due to hair straightening. Frequent use of chemicals and hair straightening iron can cause permanent damage to hair follicles which will eventually lead to hair loss.

  • Hair Fall

Frequent use of heat and chemicals causes damage to hair follicles which can increase hair fall.

  • Dryness

With heat especially, the hair loses most of its moisture which seeps out of the hair shaft and makes the hair excessively dry.

  • Stunted Hair Growth

The rate of hair growth is stunted after the hair cuticles are damaged due to frequent straightening.

  • Skin Irritation

Many chemical products used during the hair straightening procedures come in contact with the skin of many parts of the body. This can cause irritation as the chemicals are not made to be put on the skin.

  • Split Ends

The hair can break and get damaged, causing hair strands to split and appear unattractive.

  • Allergic Reactions

Not everyone’s skin will be suited to the straightening products and some people might develop allergies to it.

  • Development of Poor Hair Structure

By using strong chemicals and applying heat that destroys the bonds that make up the hair structure, permanent damage is caused to the hair. These chemicals make the hair dull, dry, and brittle. Burning of the hair is also possible.

Side effects of Hair Straightening

Permanent hair straightening chemically alters the hair and changes its texture. The results of these treatments last for months or up to a year, which is why most people prefer them instead of straightening the hair daily with a straightener. This also saves time. There are several types of treatment; thermal straightening, keratin treatments, “perm” straightening processes.

A somewhat common side effect of permanent hair straightening is hair breakage. The chemical solution works by damaging the bonds in the hair shafts so that it lies flat and the bonds in the hair structure which hold its natural shape are broken, releasing the natural curl. The formaldehyde used in the straightening solutions is also a known carcinogen. It’s hazardous to inhale its fumes as it can cause breathing difficulty, irritation to the nose and eyes, skin rash, and redness. Other cons of hair straightening can be breakage, split ends, and hair loss.

Safe ways of Hair Straightening

The major problem with hair straightening is that the heat causes damage and makes the hair prone to breaking and becoming weaker, which increases frizz. Some ways to safely style your hair can be:

  • The flat iron being used should be proper with ceramic plates and temperature control. Don’t buy it if it doesn’t have ceramic plates.
  • Prepare your hair with a straightening shampoo and conditioner.
  • Use a brush with capped bristles on wet hair.
  • The hair should be completely and 100% dry.
  • 310 degrees Fahrenheit is the optimum and magic number.
  • Use a heat protectant; it will save the hair from heat from the flat iron. You can also use it before blow-drying the hair.

The hair is a big part of your image and personality. Save it from heat and chemicals as much as possible to look great and feel confident. It is the first thing people will notice when you walk into a room. Just like straight hair, healthy hair never goes out style!
