coconut oil

The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) is a tall palm tree belonging to the Arecaceae family in tropical and subtropical areas.

People in these areas call it a “miracle tree” and harvest the coconuts for their nutritional, cosmetic, and medicinal values.

Coconut oil is composed of 80-90% saturated fat, however, it does not contain cholesterol.

This is the reason that it has a firm texture at cold or room temperatures. It contains medium-chain triglycerides which are shorter chain fatty acids.

There are numerous health benefits of consuming coconut oil in the diet. It is known to burn fat and provide quick energy to the brain and body.

It raises good cholesterol levels in the body, which also prevents cardiovascular disease.

  1. It aids in weight loss

Coconut oil has medium-chain fatty acids which lower the levels of bad cholesterols and raises good cholesterol levels.

Women who supplemented their diet with coconut oil, in a study were found to have a smaller waistline by the end of the 12th week.

  1. It boosts your metabolism

Due to the type of fatty acids in coconut oil, you burn the calories you consume faster as compared to the oils which contain higher chain fatty acids.

The MCTs go straight to the liver and the body uses them as a quick source of energy and turns them into ketones.

  1. It protects against Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia and usually affects older people. This condition reduces the brain’s ability to utilize glucose.

Ketones produced by the metabolism of coconut oil serve as an alternative source of energy and combats this illness.

  1. Oil pulling in dental health

Oil pulling is an ancient, Indian folk remedy claimed to whiten your teeth, freshen your breath and greatly improve your oral health.

It requires you to swish the oil around the mouth, much like using mouthwash, for around 15 to 20 minutes.

This reduces the harmful bacteria in the oral cavity. The bacteria dissolve into the oil and get swept away.

Extra virgin coconut oil is preferred for this practice, as it has very good taste. This practice can reduce gingivitis, periodontal diseases, caries, and bad breath.

Coconut oil can help you to tame your hair if this is one of your daily struggles. In the frizzy areas of your head, run your fingers through the hair with coconut oil dabbed on them.

This will make your hair look smooth and polished. Many frizz-free serums and oils contain coconut oil in them which strengthen and nourish the hair.

Makes hair shiny and glossy

For dark hair, applying a small amount of coconut oil onto the ends of the hair can make them shiny and glossy.
